Snack, Chat, and Chill
Snack, Chat, and Chill is a series of interactive, nutritional education gatherings with a focus on improving mental health and placed in a social setting for people with disabilities. Crafted and initiated by Get FIT @ Rowan, the program has launched to other local institutions, including Rutgers Camden, Cumberland County Community College, and Stockton University. The classes typically include making a healthy recipe together, engaging in discussions with peers, and meditating. Students and staff of the institution provide instruction and discussion leading. Snack, Chat, and Chill has become an excellent addition to our family of programs at Get FIT and is a successful way to teach about nutrition, help clients make friendships, and practice relaxation/mindfulness skills.
Initiative made possible by the South Jersey Institute of Public Health.
Inclusive Healthy Communities Grant Program
Family Resource Network and the Get FIT Coalition received grant funding from NJ Department of Human Services, Division of Disability Services to make public areas more welcoming and inclusive to bettering the health and wellness of individuals with disabilities.
Family Resource Network has partnered with Rowan University and Stockton University within the first grant period of funding, January 2021-June 2022. The Rowan team collaborated with 7 community gardens to make them more inclusive by building all-abilities garden plots throughout Camden, Gloucester and Atlantic County. Rowan worked with 5 group homes where adults with disabilities reside. Vegetable and herb gardens were built in each home, in addition to 2-3 cooking classes with residents, hosted by Rowan and Stockton graduate students.
The Stockton team created a 10-module Professional Development (PD) series which will give the participant 4 PD hours from Stockton University upon completion of all 10-modules. The Stockton team also created 13 exercise videos with assistance from their graduate students and the Stockton production staff. The videos can be found on YouTube.
FRN had created a scorecard to estimate inclusivity and accessibility in public spaces, that will be actively utilized in Cohort 2 of funding.
This project had three major deliverables across three organizations, Family Resource Network, Rowan and Stockton Universities. FRN developed a scorecard to estimate inclusivity and accessibility in public spaces. The Rowan team created 7 inclusive community gardens by building all-abilities garden plots throughout South Jersey. Rowan worked with 5 group homes where adults with disabilities reside to build vegetable and herb gardens and implement 2-3 cooking classes at each home hosted by Rowan and Stockton students. The Stockton team created a 10-module Professional Development (PD) series which provides 4 PD hours along with 13 exercise demonstration videos.
Center on Nutrition and Disability
The Center on Nutrition and Disability was launched in 2013 as a nutrition education source of the national Get FIT Movement. The resources that live on the Center’s website can be used by self-advocates, caregivers, families, and health care professionals.
Since its establishment in 2013, the Center has implemented community-based nutrition education and cooking classes for children and adults with disabilities, allowing them to explore the benefits of healthy eating and trying new foods and textures. As an advocate for an inclusive culture of health and wellness, the Center has also assisted community-based facilities with the development of wheelchair accessible community gardens. The Center offers a series of webinars, Inclusive Standards of Nutrition, trainings such as the Fresh Foods Initiative, and nutrition focused resources for individuals with disabilities, providers and caregivers in efforts to equip them with the skills and resources needed to promote sustainable healthy eating.
