Best Practices

Dental health should be a priority for people of all abilities. Both nutrition and medications can have negative effects on oral health. People with disabilities may need extra help to achieve and maintain good oral health habits, here are some tips:

A Dental Program designed with a dentist should include:

  • Check-ups and cleaning should be completed every 6 months
  • Daily brushing and flossing
  • Share with the dentist any prescribed medications (including dosage levels and any side effects that you have experiences)

To help ensure a safe and effective dental visit, here are some recommended tips:

  • There is a benefit in knowing about and preparing for the dental office visit ahead of time. Waiting until the last minute to tell a child/adult with special needs about the visit can make the experience of going to the dentist form negative associations that can make other visits more challenging
  • Preparation for the appointment may include video, photos, graphics, drawings, or whatever tools you can to help your loved one know what to expect
  • Inform dentist of complete medical history
  • Tell a dental team member if you experience an aura
  • Visit the dentist accompanied by someone you trust
